According to multiple unclassified/declassified sources, the CIA funded the works of several [redacted] artists [redacted] during the Cold War in order to spotlight innovative artwork in a capitalist system. This funding occurred despite the fact that the unwitting artists were at times anti-capitalist and/or anti-government. One of the mechanisms the CIA created to fund these artists, for example, was the Congress for Cultural Freedom, headquartered in Paris.
